Furniture Restoration: Gilt, Ormolu And Painted

Gilding is the fixing of gold leaf to a prepared surface and rubbing it into place. Gold leaf will not tarnish: it lasts for years, giving a true gold look to any wood, metal or plaster base. The lavish and decadent lives of yester year found the need to have almost every piece of furniture that they owned gilded, really evident in the 17th and 18th centuries across the globe. Today these fine pieces still have the same allure, but for totally different reasons - being antiques.

Old gold leaf antiques can be cleaned with water containing a few drops of ammonia. New gold leaf can be bought in plain sheets, or in transfers that have a tissue backing. The transfer sheets are much easier to use than the plain sheets. When applying gold leaf to a restored area, make sure that the surface is clean and dry. Paint the base with Japan gold size and leave it to get 'tacky'. Lay the sheets in place, slightly overlapping at the edges; rub them down carefully, following the direction of the overlap, with a clean cotton cloth until the edges blend evenly together. The knack is to lay the sheets on the surface when the size has reached the correct degree of 'tackiness'. If the size is too wet, the leaf crinkles; if it is too dry, the leaf will not stick.

Today the value of antiques will depend on whether pure gold leaf was used or wax gild, as was common practise to reduce the cost of making a fine piece of furniture. The other popular alternative, gold paint, although simple to apply, produces a rather garish finish and lacks depth. Wax gilts, available at most art shops these days, come in many tones of gold. They are ideal for touching-up damaged of gold leaf and for applying a broken gilt surface over white or coloured paint. They are simple to apply, ensuring that even most unskilful restorer can restore their prize antique piece. Wax guilt can easily be removed with turpentine substitute, so a good idea is to protect it with a covering of clear alcohol-based varnish. Another alternative is liquid leaf, again easy to apply. It can be brushed on, or drawn on with a pen. It is brighter than gold leaf and does not have the same 'antique' finish as wax guilt, hence larger areas may not have the desired effect especially when restoring your antique piece.

Ormolu is bronze, cast into decorative shapes that are gilded with gold leaf and attached to parts of furniture. A form of decoration that was developed from ormolu is brass alloy, with the same appearance as gold. The surface of ormolu often becomes tarnished because the brass sweats through the gilding. Clean it by brushing the surface gently with soap and warm water containing a few drops of ammonia. To remove any obstinate dirt from the surface, add more ammonia. Always wear rubber gloves for this work.

To restore faded or damaged antique pieces of painted furniture, scrape the paint down to the surface and fill any deep scratches or holes with plastic wood, or Polymer texturing paste. Rub the area with fine glass-paper and repaint, using matching artists' oil colours. To achieve a matt finish, only use undercoat paint; cover it when dry with a good-quality matt varnish. Small areas of old paint texture can be matched by using white undercoat as a base. Apply matching colours with artists' oil paint, which should always be a tone lighter than the original. When the paint dries, it should match the original tones. A varnish may be applied; however, it is best to varnish the entire area rather than the retouched area. This will give an overall even texture to your antique piece. New gloss may be a bit too shiny when dry; if so, rubbing it down gently with steel wool will give it that aged antique look.

There is a myriad of pushchairs and strollers on the market. Wonderful sounding names such as Bugaboo and Cosatto. Most parents will know of Mamas and Papas - but what are the most important aspects to choosing the right pushchair for your child or children?

Is a pushchair or stroller a fashion statement? You could be forgiven for believing that it is. Many new pushchairs boast ultra-modern designs, colour changing abilities and they come with a price tag to match.

I first became interested in pushchairs when I became a father - obviously! - and like many parents fell into the marketing trap, choosing a pushchair for all the wrong reasons. The right reasons for choosing a pushchair are weight - it should be light, mobility - it should be easy to push, price - it should be affordable and sensibly-priced, it must meet safety standards and it should be a manageable size.

In terms of size this was our first mistake. There are some wonderfully attractive three-wheeler pushchairs/strollers available (the sort you see in glossy magazines, being pushed by celebrities out jogging) but wait, they are not practical on a day-to-day basis unless you intend to go jogging. Try getting through a shop doorway - many are as wide as twin pushchairs.

What if you have twins? Tandem strollers have one seat in front of the other, but if you have ever tried to push one you will realise that trying to wheelie up a kerb-stone is like doing it will a full supermarket trolley.

Then there are tandem buggies that are no longer than a single buggy - but they have really high handles so if you are 5 foot or just a little taller they will be impossible to push.

There are lots of things to consider when buying a pushchair or buggy. I created a pushchair review site so parents could post honestly about their experience to ensure fewer people fall into the huge marketing trap surrounding pushchairs.

Once a week my best friend and I enjoy getting together.

Ever since the days of high school my friend Jackie and I were inseparable. We did everything together. We made a pact, before graduating, that no matter what, we would keep in touch.

That was 35 years ago and we still share our lives together.

One of the things we both enjoy doing is eating out.

After spending the entire week with our families cooking and packing lunches every day, eating out with my best friend is something we both look forward to doing.

So we make our plan during the week and settle on a time and place to have a delicious meal at a restaurant. We generally pick a restaurant that we have never been to. We love to do this because it frees us up from family, allows us to chat and gossip, and just enjoy a great meal, without ever having to think about dishes and the clean up.

It was a bright and sunny Sunday.

I picked up my friend at her house and headed out to a restaurant across town. On the way, I had run out of cigarettes and we made a quick stop to make the purchase.

We finally arrived at our destination, relieved to get off the busy highway. The restaurant was located in a wooded area in a rural section of town.

Manning our purses and cigarettes, we were eager to get inside and enjoy our anticipated meal.

"Smoking, or non-smoking?"

This question was posed to us by the eager young, smiling hostess at the charming restaurant we were in..

"Smoking," we both replied, smiling back.

We were then told that as of June 1, smoking was allowed only at the bar, and that we could eat at our table, but would have to smoke at the bar.

As we looked at one another, we asked the hostess to repeat what she had just said, as we became defensive, being in total denial. The hostess repeated, the much rehearsed reply again.

What! As if there is a dividing line in the air for second-hand smoke?

Hopping up on a bar stool to have a cigarette was out of the question. Not with my bad back! I had trouble getting on my pantyhose this morning, not to mention, getting out of our parked car.

The issue of clean air is bordering on the ridiculous!

Clean air just does not exist, not even in a smoke-free environment. The list of pollutants is long.

When you think about it, possibly the most important source of air pollution and floating carcinogens in restaurants is cooking. Cooking fat, as it decomposes, releases gases into the air that lodge in our lungs.

Other dangers that lurk in restaurant air are candles, romantically burning on the tables, while patrons breathe airborne soot particles.

What did we want to do, the hostess asked?

The decision was simple. "Leave," we replied, as we both walked out into the "clean air."

It's been an interesting few years for those that follow the relationship between the electric wheelchair industry and Medicare. Fifteen years ago, chances are you never heard of electric wheelchairs. Although they have been around for longer than that, they were not readily available until the past 10 to 12 years.

That's when companies like The Scooter Store and Hoveround began to market the wheelchairs nationally in the same manor that diabetic supply companies promoted diabetic medical supplies that were Medicare covered. When these companies began their national advertising campaigns for electric wheelchairs, the demand for the equipment nearly tripled in under three years (from 1999 to 2002). The Medicare expenditures for these wheelchairs increased by a whopping $556 million over this time period.

This does not, however, mean that the increase has been a bad thing for Medicare. According to a 2005 independent study, the electric wheelchair industry actually saves Medicare billions annually because Medicare people who receive electric wheelchairs tend to be healthier overall and suffer fewer injuries. The study found that the rate of people with broken hips was significantly lower when individuals had electric wheelchairs.

Over the past three to five years, the electric wheelchair industry and Medicare have battled over who should qualify for this type of medical equipment and how much Medicare should pay for those that receive it. Last year, Medicare finally released what seems to be the new directive for pricing and eligibility for electric wheelchairs. Below is a brief overview.

Medicare Electric Wheelchair Eligibility

To be eligible to receive an electric wheelchair through Medicare a person must have what is considered a daily living activity need for it and that need must be inside the home. Medicare currently does not covered electric wheelchairs or scooters for people who exclusively need them outside the home.

Daily living activities include feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting and so on. What does this really mean? It means that a person must need the chair to get around inside the home for at least one of these activities. Medicare will only consider the person eligible if he or she cannot conduct these specific daily living requirements with the use of a manual wheelchair, cane, walker or freely.

How Much will an Electric Wheelchair Cost?

The pricing for electric wheelchairs differs throughout the country. Whatever the allowable price is in your area, Medicare will typically pay for 80 percent of the cost. The remaining copayment may be picked up by your supplemental Medicare insurance if you have one. If you do not, you are responsible for the remaining 20 percent (normally between $1,200 and up).

How Do I Get an Electric Wheelchair?

You need to first ask your doctor if you are eligible and if you meet the minimum Medicare requirements. If your doctor says you do, then contact a medical equipment supply company (either a local one or a national one like The Scooter Store or Hoveround). At the moment you are enjoying your well deserved Costa Blanca holiday, after the fist couple of days in your holiday villa or apartment you might wander, where to find a nice restaurant at the Costa Blanca?

The first part of the evening you will have to search a nice restaurant, if you are in Altea, or if you want to visit this beautiful place, you will find some very nice restaurants.

If you don?t want to spend a lot of money, there is a very nice restaurant at the first line of the beach in Altea called ?Tutti Frutti?, you can gat a pizza, but I really would advice a very nice salad, served in an eatable bowl, the menus are good priced and very nice. From the terrace you can overlook the Mediterranean, which will provide you with a nice cool breeze.

Near the Altea church, moving down from the churches square in the direction of the Sierra Bernia Mountain you will find a busy street with some very nice restaurants. In ?Estromboli? you can eat very good Italian food and they have very nice smashed tomato sauce, from grandfathers own garden.

At the other side of the street you have the very nice restaurant ?Ousteau?, which is brilliantly decorated and has a fantastic ambiance. The very friendly staff will guide you to your table, which with nice warm weather can be on a cosy outside terrace, but always will be nice situated. The food is very good, you can choose from a ?Hollywood? card, making you doubt between a ?Al Pachino? steak or a ?Marlin Monroe? salad?

If you would like to spend some more, enjoying the good gastronomic life I will advice the restaurant ?el Nuevo Alcazar? in La Nucia. A really good restaurant managed by people crazy about food.

Also a very high standard you will find at the restaurant ?La Fusion? and ?Los Dos Lunas? in el Albir, 2 more to put on your list to try.

If you like to have something tipical Spanish, Benidorm is the place to be.. In the old town of Benidorm there is a special street with a lot of typical ?tapas? bars, here you will find the Spanish people enjoying all kinds of small snacks and nice wines.

Of course you will find as well Mc Donald?s as Burger king in Benidorm, but it is not recommended to go there unless you can?t really stop yourself.

The Spanish food is really great to try, like a good paella you can try it in the ?Chiringuito? in the beach of Albir, where the Spanish are all at large tables eating the paella. For those who absolutely despise of seafood there is a special paella type called ?a banda? and one with only vegetables. Also there is a very large grill were they prepare some giant steaks.

Anyway, it?s the golden rule to see if a restaurant is good, look if there are enough Spanish people sitting there!!!

By the 12th century, sitting on the floor, which at one time was what every Chinese person did, was becoming less common even though in other Asian countries the custom of sitting on the floor continued.

We then move on to the Renaissance period. In Europe especially, it is because of the Renaissance period that the chair became a symbol of authority in the European State. It became custom that the only people who had chairs were those of authority or royalty or those who could simply afford them as they were very expensive. However, once the idea of privilege faded away, the chair became more common in everyone’s household.

Once chairs started to be manufactured for common people it was immediately noticeable that the chairs themselves reflected the fashions of the times. Over the course of the Renaissance period chairs have varied in size, shape and sturdiness. They were fashioned not only after women’s dress but after men’s as well. - Wireless:? This one is simple.? If you use a wireless router or connection, make sure it's placed so that the path between the router and your computer is unobstructed.

This is especially true towards the end of the Tudor period. It was during this time that the French began to take their chair designs from the English.

The squat style chairs with heavy backs that were carved like a piece of paneling gave way to taller, more slender and elegant chairs. The framework of these chairs were less carved and new directions were taken as far as how these chairs were ornamented. Cabinet makers of the Restoration began to take advantage of the opportunities given to them to design these new chairs. Chairs began to take on an elaborate construction with graceful semicircular ornaments that connected all four legs by a vase shaped knob in the center. The concept of punching a time clock has been around since the industrial revolution of the early 1900's. However, it was not until the invention of the electronic cash register in the early 1980's that employees could clock in/out on the cash register. This eliminated the need for a punch card and greatly increased accuracy and reduced manpower needs in calculating time worked for payroll purposes.

While the need for employees to clock in and out on a terminal started off simple the requirements of government have greatly increased the demands placed upon management. There are a host of different labor laws, tip reporting requirements and labor restrictions governing the number of hours to be worked in a day/week and even when minors are allowed to work.

The Need For An Employee Time Clock

What started off simple has quickly become complex. Your needs are far greater than a simple time clock that tracks the clock in and out times for your employees. You need help with the government regulations regarding different aspects of your labor pool.

Tip reporting and handling have become a huge issue in the restaurant business. You need help tracking tipped employees and what they declare as tips earned.

Tracking employee breaks has become a bigger and bigger hassle. Some states govern the length of breaks and whether they are paid or not. I know of one state that requires a minimum of a 20 minute unpaid break per employee. If that employee clocks back in 1 minute early, their entire break is paid. Who has time to monitor every employee's break?

And we have just now gotten to the problem of employees clocking in early, riding the clock or simply having a friend clock them in when they aren't even there!

You need help. You need an integrated time clock and you need it bad.

The Solution Of The Employee Time Clock

Some point of sale systems come standard with an employee time clock feature that is designed specifically for restaurants and the goofy requirements placed upon restaurant owners.

All employees can clock in/out on any terminal in the system. There is no set terminal that must be used by all employees. Any employee may clock in on any terminal.

Security and secrecy should be a concern and point of sale software products have different ways of accomplishing this.

* Secret 4-digit employee code for clock in/out.
* Optional magnetic card reader and magnetic cards for employees to use when clocking in/out.
* Optional biometric reader which recognizes individual fingerprints for employee clock in/out.

Employee breaks are tracked and various rules can be set depending upon your own state's regulations.

Tipped employees are required to declare their tips earned when they clock out for the day. These declared amounts are then reported with their time worked.

What good would all this data do if we didn't report on it? Most software products are able to track and report on all time clock data and use weekly, bi-weekly, bi-monthly and monthly payroll cycles. Be sure to verify that the product you are looking at will meet all of your requirements before purchase.

Some point of sale products will also export all time clock data to file for import into several different accounting packages.

The Benefit Of The Employee Time Clock To You

This feature has several benefits. Let's list a few:

* Increased accuracy over punch cards and manual time tracking.
* Reduced rounding errors in computing time.
* Reduced time for management to compute employee hours.

There's a proliferation of books, both printed and electronic (downloadable from the Web), that purport to tell you how to copy your favorite dishes from your favorite restaurants. Some of these are better than others, but they all raise the question: Is it legal to "copycat" recipes in this way?

These days, with the music industry going after people who use file-sharing services to illegally post songs for others to copy, and with prominent anti-copying warnings from the FBI stuck on every movie DVD we rent or purchase, it's a natural question. People wonder if they are breaking some law by cloning a restaurant's most famous recipe--whether it's by passing around the instructions or by actually cooking and serving it to friends.

Mind you, I'm no lawyer. But I've talked to a couple of lawyer friends as well as to a number of restaurant managers. The bottom line is this: If you cook up your favorite steak or lobster dish (or whatever) copied from Big Name Restaurant--even if it's an exact duplicate--you need not worry that a SWAT team is going to break down your door and haul you away. Nor will an army of lawyers be descending on your kitchen.

Now, if you decide to open your own restaurant with dishes copied from well-known chain restaurants, and if you are so un-subtle as to give them the same names as the originals, you might have trouble on your hands! Short of this unlikely scenario, you're probably safe. But we're not talking here about going into business with other people's recipes, are we? (If you're contemplating anything along that line, then you really must consult an attorney.)

Cooking for friends can be fun. It can be more fun if you serve them dishes that are exactly like ones from their favorite restaurant. If that's your intention, and you're doing it in a private setting, you can set your mind at ease about the law. The only question then becomes, what dish do I want to clone, and where can I get a genuine recipe?

An Offbeat Glossary of Restaurant Terms

Everyone knows what a bistro is...right? And a la carte is a term that even a fifth grader knows...well, maybe not. And what exactly does smart casual mean? There are so many words and terms in the English language that are taken for granted, including those used in the restaurant industry. In a public service to diners from Boston to Bakersfield, Boston's Hidden Restaurants presents a glossary of useful, as well as totally useless, restaurant terms. (Note: This page is part of our restaurant features section.)

A La Carte
A term used by more upscale, expensive restaurants that means each item is separate. If a restaurant says that bread and water are a la carte, flee as quickly as you can.

Bar Pizza
A type of pizza served in bars (duh!) that is smaller in diameter (usually about 10 inches) and greasier than pizzas found in restaurants or sub shops. Bar pizza tends to taste better with beer, and MUCH better after many beers.

Bistro
A small restaurant, usually informal, that typically has a decent wine list. If a place that calls itself a bistro does not have a wine list, it is simply known as a "small restaurant."

Captain
An employee at a restaurant who supervises the waitstaff and typically seats patrons. These people used to be called "hosts," but for some reason, many restaurants now call them "captains." Some restaurants include a place on the bill for tipping captains. If you see this, flee as quickly as you can.

Chef
Typically, the chief cook of a restaurant staff. Don't ever call a chef a cook; he or she will not like that and may put some extra MSG in your food.

Cold Tea
A term used, usually late at night, that means beer. This term is fairly common in Chinese restaurants that stay open after the bars close. The serving of cold tea is often illegal and unethical, and we at Boston's Hidden Restaurants do not condone the ordering of cold tea. But our view on that may change from weekend to weekend.

Kosher
Food that conforms to Jewish dietary laws and rituals. Pork and shellfish are never kosher, nor is meat mixed with dairy products. If you see a restaurant named "Ralph's Clam Shack and Rib House," chances are, it is not kosher.

Prix Fixe
A full meal, typically with between three and seven courses that is offered at a set price. Often, that set price will drive a person to drinking lots and lots of cold tea once his or her credit card bill comes in the following month.

Smart Casual
A dubious restaurant dress-code term, typically meaning, "no jeans and sneakers, but don't wear with a suit and tie, either." In other words, dress like you are playing 18 holes of golf (but don't wear metal spikes). George Costanza on "Seinfeld" coined this term. 'Nuff said.

A restaurant, usually informal, that serves simple, old-fashioned Italian meals. If a trattoria also has a decent wine list, another name for the place would be bistro (see). But a bistro cannot be a trattoria unless it serves Italian food. However, if a bistro does serve Italian food but does not have a decent wine list, then it is no longer a bistro. It is a trattoria. Actually, it may be best to just forget the whole thing. Both are restaurants. OK?

Scandinavian theme furniture is also known as Danish Theme or Scandinavian Modern. The theme was experimented with in the years before World War II to some degree, but it was the War itself that really gave it birth. The war crippled the manufacturing facilities in the Scandinavian countries, and created massive material shortages. Furniture makers were forced to look to the craftsman of the past, and to the local materials like oak, clay, and linen that were available. They also had been heavily influenced by the war in other ways. They were tired of fear and despair, and wanted to find a way to express their optimism for the future in a way that anticipated it while keeping just a hint of respect for the past.

The result was a new theme of furniture that featured clean lines. It was sharp and without a lot of frills. The pieces were often designed to save space. They were smaller, and often folded up with a touch of the finger or were easily stacked. They had a distinctly futuristic look. Table tops seemed to be floating above their frames as if unattached. This was, of course, Scandinavian theme furniture.

Edgar Kauffman Jr. was on the staff of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He was the son of the owner of an estate in Pennsylvania called "Fallingwater." It had been designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and was built around a waterfall. Kauffman had a lot of influence in the design community in New York, and he fell in love with the new Scandinavian look. He decorated Fallingwater with select pieces of the theme, and this action brought instant fame and attention in the United States furniture community to Scandinavian theme furniture.

In the 1950's, the theme spread across the United States. It was popular with the young and mobile new generation of Americans who were also tired of the war years, and looking toward the future. Their homes were smaller, and they tended to move more frequently. The attention to smaller size made the pieces perfect fits. They were also easy to clean and maintain. Their light weight made them painless to move. As American firms began to experiment with them, they were influenced a bit by the Jetsons Cartoons, and Scandinavian pieces were made even more futuristic. In doing so, the natural materials of the originals were replaced by materials the Scandinavians would never have dreamed of using for furniture. It was the time of the plastic square table, and the austere shelving units often associated with the theme.

Trends change, and the prosperity of the 1980's and 1990's led to a revival of interest in the more stylistic and refined lines and shapes of the past. Often Scandinavian theme furniture seemed more like "Mom's furniture" as a new generation sought their own expression. The theme declined even in the Scandinavian countries where people began to have a nostalgic feeling for the pre-war themes.

Today, some large retailers sell lines of Scandinavian theme furniture, at least the Americanized version. Older originals are still found in yard sales and flea markets. Strangely, much of it does not make us look hopefully into the future as much as it reminds us of how Mom's place used to look when we were kids. Ah, the passing of generations.

Mexican Living Survival Tip # 11 ? Restaurants

Eating out is a source of pleasure and cheap entertainment in Mexico in general and in Guanajuato in particular. We are always being asked where we recommend visitors eat. The difficulty in answering this question is that for $12.00 USD, you would be able to feed four adults. Americans think that is a cheap to feed one adult. Visiting gringos find it incredible that you can get a good meal in this city for under $4.00.

Most local restaurants in Guanajuato will have something called, El Menu del D?a, or The Meal of the Day. This will consist, usually, of something from the regular menu that is served for a really cheap price. You get a choice of two soups, vegetable, starch, and meat. Sometimes the drink and dessert is included.

The portions are not anywhere the size of potions in the U.S. but the meal is filling and will satisfy you. One or two restaurants will serve something out-of-the-ordinary for their regular customers. We frequent one place that will give us the ?heads up? when they plan to serve liver (yes, we love liver!). It is not on their regular menu.

In some of the upper-range restaurants in the El Jardin area, their Meal of the Day can be very elegant with American-sized portions. These will be more expensive, around $6.50 per person, but is worth it every now and then. Some of these restaurants have bilingual waiters who can speak a bit of English.

We rarely eat out for any meal other than La Cena (the mid-day meal). We usually take advantage of the meal of the day. Sometimes we order from the menu. So, here are our suggestions of where you can eat, whether you are a visitor or expat in Guanajuato:

Truco 7 ? When we get a hankering for a good steak, we eat here. We have expat pals who refuse to believe that you can get a good steak anywhere in Mexico. We take exception to that gross misstatement. Truco 7 is a trendily-decorated place that is well worth the time and effort to visit. It is off the beaten path and until you get to know Guanajuato you can ask anyone, ??D?nde est? Truco Siete?? and they will more than likely escort you there personally. We normally choose bistec y papas or steak and fries which is accompanied by a small salad, a little guacamole, and bolillos (a French-bread type roll). It is absolutely delicious.

Tapatio ? This is located across the street from the enormous staircase that leads up to the main building of the University of Guanajuato. This is the place of choice to go for The Meal of the Day. The service is decent but not exceptional. However, it is immensely popular with Mexicans because of the food. You might be able to strike up a conversation or two with your fellow diners if you want. They have an excellent dish called Milanesa de pollo o res. This a piece of chicken breast (or beef) that is pounded into oblivion, resulting in an almost wafer-thin piece of meat. It is then lightly breaded and fried. It is usually served with fries, guacamole, and a small collection of freshly cut vegetables. It is the breading and seasoning of Milanesa that makes it very good.

Casa Valadez ? This is owned by a very old family here in Guanajuato. My wife used to teach English to one of the members of this family. Casa Valadez is probably the closest thing in this town resembling an international restaurant. It has a bilingual menu and serves some American dishes along with some of the traditional Mexican dishes. If you get it into your head that you want an exceptional hamburger, then you have to eat here. In addition, the service is outstanding! They treat you like they simply adore you and that you made their day for stopping by. They also serve what I think is the best food in town. I have yet to find an exception. The presentation makes you wonder if they have Wolfgang Puck in the back. It is a nice place all around and even has someone who plays the piano during the afternoon meal. Our favorite ?off-the-menu? dish is a regional dish called Enchilada Mineras.

No place else serves such an exceptional plate of Enchiladas Mineras. If you are in the mood to be pampered and fussed over, go here?even for a hamburger.

Chairs - History Part III

In this next article in our continuing history of chairs we're going to pick up with Chinese chairs.

Once chairs started to be manufactured for common people it was immediately noticeable that the chairs themselves reflected the fashions of the times. Over the course of the Renaissance period chairs have varied in size, shape and sturdiness. They were fashioned not only after women's dress but after men's as well. The chair itself started to become too monstrous with many of the items they were adorned with and soon these items started to disappear in order to make the chair more functional.

By the 18th and 19th centuries the costly adornments of these chairs were threatened by the ordinary adornments of the more common chairs. Because of this came the development of the "conversation chair" which enabled the person sitting in it to sit with his face to the back of the chair. This can actually still be done with many chairs even today. The earlier chairs usually had large arms and it wasn't until the end of the 16th century that the smaller chairs became common.

The majority of chairs in the 17th century were made of oak and were made without upholstery. When it became fashionable to cover them, most of the time leather was used. Sometimes velvet and silk were also used. During later periods, less costly materials were used.

An old Abraham Bosse engraving from around 1630 depicts a Parisian musical party that has pulled their low chairs, which were called backstools, away from the tapestry hung walls where they were usually lined up. The padded back panels were covered with needlework panels. Plain cloth was put across the back to hide the wooden framing. The engraving also depicts stools with column legs.

Leather began to be used only for the most costly and elaborate chairs. These chairs were sheathed in thin plates of silver and were usually sent from Venice to other places all over Europe. To this day, leather is still the most infrequently used material for chairs. Until the 17th century the main characteristic of chairs was to be made sturdy and bulky. After the time of Louis XIII, chairs were made with cane backs and seats and their weight was reduced substantially.

Have you ever gone to a restaurant that in the past was always packed with customers and all of a sudden it closed?

Let me share with you this story because there's an incredible success lesson in it for us.

Last night my wife and I went out to get dinner at one of our favorite places. It's a small place in downtown New York (great food).

As we were walking to the restaurant, we passed another restaurant that was usually packed.

But not tonight.

There was a sign on the door saying 'Closed'.

Wow, was I surprised. I thought it was doing so well; I mean it was always crowded.

When we got to our restaurant, I asked what had happened to the one that closed and here's what I was told:

"The restaurant looked like it was doing great, but they had one big problem they couldn't get rid of. That problem was EXCESS OVERHEAD. They couldn't get rid of it intelligently and it brought down the whole place."

Later in the night it got me thinking.

How much EXCESS OVERHEAD do we have in our lives that holds us down and closes down our dreams and potential?

Are you controlled and held down by fear?

Do you find yourself living in the past to much?

Are you holding grudges against people that have long forgotten the 'fight'?

We need to dump the excess overhead and live in the present and go for what we want with EVERYTHING we have.

With the onset of fast foods and the quick cook and ready cooked meals available along with the ever increasing choice of world cuisine, the enjoyment of these different foods have opened new options to the consumer within the food market.

In today's busy world where leisure time has become more and more important, the less time spent working and preparing to eat allows us more available time for our pursuit of our leisure activities.

People who do not have the ability, time or will to cook at home now only have to pick up the phone book or click on the Internet in order to find their local restaurant or fast food retailer that will be more than happy to deliver the freshly prepared hot food ready to eat straight to their door with minimum fuss.

Although the fast food retailers compete with each other fiercely, using their special offers and cheaper and healthier alternatives to entice us to their premises, the main stay of traditional restaurants still hold an important part in our lives.

Even though these places are vastly out numbered by the fast food industry, we still enjoy sitting down in the nice comfortable and pleasant surroundings of a restaurant and dining on good quality food at a leisurely pace, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of daily life and the fast food rush.

Traditional restaurants will always offer us that pleasant alternative to eating at home, ordering take out from our local fast food dispenser or visiting their drive through or small busy caf style restaurants. Not forgetting those special occasions or romantic rendezvous, these still command the need for that quiet stylish quality restaurant where we know that the food wine and service will always be excellent and the experience wonderful and charming.

Article marketing mastery sounds more like an unattainable ideal than an actual destination doesn't it?

I don't expect to ever leave my trusty Dell one day, after writing an article and say "Damn. Nailed it. Time to 'master' something else."

It won't happen. And that's the beauty of all of this.

Progress not perfection.

While I was a copywriter at J Walter Thompson and Young & Rubicam in New York, we creatives would get literally drained by the amount of times we would have to present our ideas. Internally and to the all mighty clients who pay all the bills. Present to this person, present to that person. Get on a plane to Atlanta, present. Go to focus groups, present.

One of the tricks that we came up with during all of that tedium was a game where we would try and insert a phrase into meetings with the head clients. Simple phrase...were totally unique but also HAD NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO SELL THEM.

The 'game' part of it was to see who could most creatively insert the phrase!

For instance, before we got into the conference room with the client, the creatives would agree on the phrase, and the more ridiculous the better. So if I was selling ideas to The Bronx Zoo (which I continually did), the phrase might have been something outrageous like having to say "albino criminals" or "why LAWN FURNITURE IS SEXY.' And who ever could do it WITHOUT calling attention to how RIDICULOUS it sounded...won!

Bear with me here, I'm turning the corner.

Well what I didn't know at the time, but do very well know now is that what we were actually accomplishing with this little creative 'phrase game' was that we were inserting unique KEYWORDS into the meeting. We were, in fact, 'cloaking our keywords.'

That's right...KEYWORDS.

Now, here's why you should be playing this not so little game...

By finding VERY SMART ways to insert unique phrases into your articles THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TOPIC OF YOUR ARTICLES, you will be able to track them as they fly around the net.

You'll be able to do natural searches for your own CRAZY keywords and see which webmasters have picked up your content. Because of the uniqueness of your keywords, they will completely be your own. No one else should have ever used these words in combination...that's your tracking key.

Again, it is very important that you DON'T use a crazy keyword (which can be more than one word, don't forget) that will pull your readers off course. It can't be disruptive. So finding clever ways of putting them in there is important to the natural flow.

Try it with one article.

Watch as your work ends up in countries you've never even heard of before.

It's as wild as...let me think...as wild as albino criminals I suppose.
